After opening speeches from INN's rector, Kathrine Skretting, and DNF's dean, Karin Julsrud, the head of CEFIMA, Fredrik Graver, introduced the main speaker, Jannicke Mikkelsen.
The London-based Mikkelsen, FNF (The Norwegian Society of Cinematographers), is an award-winning VR film director and cinematographer. She's internationally renowned for her collaboration with the current lead singer of Queen, Adam Lambert, and their award-winning Virtual Reality film "VR the Champions". The film is the first of its kind – a live recording, filmed in 360-degree 3D. Mikkelsen is recognized by the industry as "One of Norway’s most influential women in tech of 2017".
Jannicke Mikkelsen gave an entertaining and exciting talk, where she spoke about her work and the road that lead her to where she is today. She had the following to say about DNF and CEFIMA:
- I think it's very exciting that DNF has committed to VR, it's a bold move by the school. I believe VR is developing. We get holograms, AR (augmented reality) and MR (mixed reality), to mention but a few. All these will become an integral part of our lives in the future. I reckon it's something that can be used for everyday tasks, but I don't think there are too many people who've been able to utilize it as a narrative element, and that's where we need the know-how and the artists to work with the new materials, and not be confined to the film format and the flat canvas.
- What's up-and-coming now, are cinemas with LED screens, and filmmakers need to be aware of that, because it changes how you tell your story with images. It's great that the Film School is ahead of the technology and on the ball, so that the students may quickly understand what they have to work with, and try to feel out the challenges a little before they face them in real life.
CEFIMA's fellows, Cecilie Levy and Nadja Lipsyc, also presented their projects, which both look at the application of VR in narratives.
